Chromecast gets seven new apps, including Comedy Central and Nick

图片
From humble beginnings, the  Chromecast  has grown into a formidable opponent for would-be competitor products due to an extremely aggressive price tag, tight integration with our mobile devices, and an ever-growing library of multimedia and  gaming apps  that support the platform. Even though Google has since introduced  Android TV  as a more powerful alternative to the Chromecast, Mountain View continues to expand the level of app support for the tiny media streamer. With this in mind, we now get seven new officially supported apps: Comedy Central, Sesame Street Go, Nickelodeon, TuneIn, Epix, YuppTV and Encore Play. While Comedy Central and Nickelodeon are probably the biggest hitters out of the above mentioned apps, it is great to see Google continuing to push Chromecast forward. As the media streaming market changes, are you still enthralled by Google’s Chrome-powered streamer or has your attention turned to another device like Fire TV, or Google’s ow...

Milk Studios sues Samsung over use of the dairy product’s name

图片
Samsung is no stranger to lawsuits, especially in the smartphone era. For the past several years, it has been engaged in a protracted legal battle with Apple over  patent infringement  issues. More recently,  it was sued  by NVIDIA, and now it looks like more legal proceedings have hit the books. Milk Studios, a multimedia company with whom Samsung has worked with in the past, is suing the Korean company for trademark infringement: Samsung chose the Milk Music and Milk Video names for its recently released  streaming music and video service . According to The Wall Street Journal: “The complaint… alleges that Samsung “intentionally, willfully and knowingly” used the Milk name for its music-streaming services to take advantage of the “cachet” associated with Milk Studios… [the plaintiff] is seeking an unspecified amount of damages for what it called unfair competition and trademark dilution.” So far, things make sense: an established company would want to...

Sony Smartwatch 3 Review

图片
The Bottom Line PROS Comfortable to wear Light weight Built-in GPS MicroUSB charging CONS No heart rate monitor Proprietary wrist straps Lackluster display 8.0 With the built-in GPS the Sony Smartwatch 3 is the best fitness centric Android Wear smartwatch, but that is the only edge this watch holds over the competition. It was certainly surprising when Sony introduced the Smartwatch 3 running Android Wear, considering that the company wasn’t officially announced as a hardware partner prior to that. Given the name, this, of course, isn’t Sony’s first foray into the smartwatch game, but definitely garnered a lot of attention by being the first Android Wear device from the company. With the competition in this space steadily growing, what does Sony’s take on Android Wear have to offer? We find out, and more, in this comprehensive review of the Sony Smartwatch 3 ! http://vondroid.com/threads/sony-smartwatch-3-review.29668/#.VHUrxnLWLfo

SwiftKey puts its themes packs on sale (50% off) for Black Friday

Popular keyboard replacement app SwiftKey is gearing up for the shopping season with a sweet deal on its themes packs. The 5-theme packs are now available for $1.49 (down from $2.99), while the 10-theme Premier pack is available for $2.49. All of these packs are available in SwiftKey’s online store: Premier pack  (10 themes) Pink pack Minimal pack Hot punch Cool punch Accent pack Material Design pack Individual themes remain at their normal $0.99 price tag, but for just fifty cent extra there’s little reason not to opt for a pack of five. I personally prefer the  recently launched Material pack , including light, dark, and three other Duarte-inspired themes, but some of the other options are just as nice. The deal is open to users from around the world, for “a limited time,” though it looks likely that it will go on at least until next Monday. To buy themes or theme packs, visit the SwiftKey store from the SwiftKey app’s settings menu.

iPad shipments decline by 12.7% in 2014, but worldwide tablet sales aren’t much better

图片
Overall, it has been a pretty good year for Android tablets. We’ve seen Google’s new  Nexus 9 , a  ton  of new  Samsung  tablets, and not to mention the countless budget-friendly options we’re so used to seeing. As far as Apple’s iPad is concerned, however, they’re not doing so hot this year. The IDC reports that Apple will have shipped 64.9 million iPads in 2014… which is a 12.7% decline from 2013. Now before we get to poking fun at the iPad, let’s be realistic. Tablet shipments worldwide are suffering by a lot. We’re not at an overall decline, but from 2013, tablet shipments have slowed down from 52.5% (2012-2013) to 7.2% (2013-2014) in year over year growth. That’s pretty bad, especially considering that tablets are constantly getting new technologies and features with every iteration. As for Android? Year over year growth has risen by 16% in 2014, and the platform still holds 67.7% of the worldwide tablet marketshare. Almost 160 million Android tablets were ...

Alternative Flash Method

Alternative Flash Method You don't have to flash the box via your PC, USB cable, reset button and Phoenix Suite. You can also a) write the stock factory image to an SD card with PhoenixCard V309, b) insert the SD card and then power cycle the box. It'll boot the image and flash it straight to nand memory. No cable, no reset required. Image to SD card = 7 - 8 minutes SD card to nand memory = 8 minutes Not the fastest route, perhaps, but avoids possible issues with drivers, USB and the burning tool. I've uploaded PhoenixCard here:  https://mega.co.nz/#!8IF3xSBD!i7Cbo8Kh-LKqxMKLPSTZ2ypSKCbuqynwqDctHnZ_d6c The link below summarizes this "Production SD Card Method". Just make sure the "Product" option is checked before writing the image to SD card. http://learn.linksprite.com/pcduino/...pcduino8-beta/ Note: with our board, you do get a helpful on-screen progress bar during the flashing stage.
